Happy Valentines Day!  Sifting thru my computer, I have a pretty nice batch of pictures

to choose from (for a change).  With all the snow on the ground, the bird feeder has been very active.

Finally caught a squirrel there, seems they’ve been scarce.  Another day the finches showed up

in droves.  I counted about 50 or 60, but that was hardly half of them as they kept moving and I

kept loosing count.

The birds aren’t the only hungry animals around here.  Moving hay for Reno and the Buffalo seems to be a never ending task.  The recent bitter wind chills (-35) meant Reno and most of the other horses in the neighborhood wore blankets for a few days.  The temperature change was just too fast for them to acclimate to it.  I could put my hand under her blanket and Reno was warm as toast, but even then, her breath still frosted her face.

Here’s Chief waiting for the sun to melt the snow off his back.  The buffalo are so well insulated that they don’t give off enough body heat to melt snow.  Here’s another nice pic of him.  He had walked across the pasture to see what Reno was up to.  There wasn’t much to see.  Reno takes a lot of afternoon naps out of the weather, and when it’s nicer she likes to warm up in the sun.  Jodi came out one day and was the first to ride Reno outside the round pen.  Afterwards, I took my turn.  I can’t wait till spring when we can go more places.  With the deep snow and ice it’s difficult to do any serious riding right now.

Been working on firewood a bit as well.  Some big Elm trees had fallen along the shore of Lily lake.  They were interfering with the draft for the local fire department that Brian belongs to.  With the winter ice to stand on, it was a bit easier to clean things up there.  Some of the larger pieces of the trunk had to get loaded with the skidsteer.

After all the record breaking snow and cold, unseasonably warm weather has all the snowmobile trails closed right now.  Yesterday was warm enough to wash the truck and trailer!
