Once again I let almost a month get by without an update. Just too much fun going on! It’s been kind of a rush to enjoy every (last) minute of the ever shortening days, and also to prepare things like animals, machinery, and yard/home for the upcoming snow season. Soon enough it will be too cold, too dark, and too late to take care of these things.
We enjoyed one of the last warm weekends by taking the horses to Caroline for their fall “Colorama” trail ride. Our friend Molly came with us. Here’s a pic of her and her horse, Harmony. We rode for several hours before coming to the halfway/lunch stop. Molly took this shot of Jodi and I there. It felt kind of good to get off by then. The scenery/weather was beautiful all day. Riding back after lunch, we thought this old barn made an interesting backdrop for a colorful picture. After the trail ride, we rode up and down the rows in the campground saying hello to anyone we knew and lusting over all the expensive trucks, trailers, tack, and animals. All in all it was a Cat 1 day.
What’s a Cat 1 day? Well, a while back I came up with this “Ranch Day Rating System”. It comes in handy when people ask how a buffalo roundup, vet work, horse ride, or some other activity went. It looks like this….
Category 1: Everything went (more or less) as planned. Category 2: Equipment damaged Category 3: Blood spilled, either animal or human Category 4: Vet required Category 5: Medical treatment required
One thing about (large) animals, you get to 3 often enough that a 1 is a real treat every now and then!
The following week, my friend Steve, wanted to get one last motorcycle ride in before some shoulder surgery and boy did the weather cooperate for that! We had beautiful shirt-sleeve weather. The warm evenings made for a comfortable early morning start. My friend Doug and I met at Brian’s, and the 3 of us left there about 0630. We rode down to Port Washington and met Steve, who had come up from Waukesha. As we headed West with no particular destination, we stopped for this picture in Horicon. That’s Steve on the left, Brian in the middle, and Doug on the right posing next to their respective mounts. My bike was voted “too dirty to be in the picture”. During the course of the day we made a point of catching the Merrimack Ferry as Doug had never seen/heard of it. The Merrimack Ferry attaches HWY 113 across Lake Wisconsin in Sauk County. It’s kind of rustic/nostalgic as it goes back to the days when bridges weren’t so easy to build. Here’s Brian and Doug enjoying the Ferry ride, also enjoying short sleeves in October!
I’ve got more, but I think I’ll save it for a bit as this “dispatch” is getting long enough already. Watch for another update next week!
