Finally got some riding in. Steve came up from Milwaukee with his new Polaris last Wednesday. He’s in the middle of this pic I snapped the following day. We trailered up to Mountain, and though we didn’t get started till almost 3, we still made Laona and back….almost a 100 mile ride. Considering the lawns are showing in Green Bay, just 60 miles to the South, the trails were in amazing condition. Didn’t get many pictures….with the late start, the afternoon was short and it got dark quick.
The next day Jodi took vacation and the three of us went riding. We started in Mountain again, had lunch at the casino in Carter and stopped at a scenic overlook on the way to Laona. The trails were still great. Here’s Jodi and Steve on the trail near Lakewood. Just North of Laona we stopped to visit one of Jodi’s friends. He snapped this pic of the three of us. We ate in Wabeno on the way South and by time we got back to the trailer, it was better than a 100 mile day. We were pretty happy to have done that 2 days in a row. Maybe winter is finally here.
Friday was time to play with the animals. Here’s Jodi with the Horses and our new dog Boomer. Jodi rescued Boomer from the shelter in Menominee. He’s a mix, but looks mostly like his Plott Hound bloodline. We did a little research and found that Plott Hounds are the only breed of hound which actually originates in the U.S. They come from North Carolina and were originally bred to hunt large animals, especially bears. He’s about 6 months old, doesn’t look like he’ll get real big, and has a really nice demeanor. He’s already learned from the cats that mice run about under the snow, and is becoming pretty proficient at finding them. Although I don’t hunt anymore, we’ve been taking him for walks with the gun just to get him use to the noise/smell. He’s doing really good.
Well, getting back to Friday….it was Dalsanto’s day for a workout. It’s lots easier with 2 people, though still hard work, to train a horse for driving. Jodi put on his collar and blinders and it started out a bit rough (as usual) but actually ended on a very good note. After pulling the winter sleigh, I jumped on his back and Jodi led us ‘round a bit to get him ready for saddle training.
If you haven’t already seen it, read my last post on building an emergency kit. I think everyone should carry one. We always think it will be the other guy but believe me, “stuff happens” to everybody.
Keep riding safe!
