Summer’s been going by pretty fast….too fast. Hay is done for the season, at least as far as the buffalo are concerned. The farmers will (hopefully) have a few cuttings yet, but I have all I need piled and covered up for this Winter. I parked the truck in this photo so you could get a feel for how much hay I need each season. It is stacked as high as the skidsteer will reach!
Jodi and I took Reno for her first trail ride. It was the first time ever we rode her outside the round pen. We went for about an hour and Reno did very good. She was even confident enough to lead for a while. Lasago got his first trailer ride with his Mom, Legit. The earlier you start, the easier it is later on, so he’ll be in for quite a few more even though we won’t ride him for quite some time. We even hooked up the carts one day and went for a ride with our friends Bob/Cher.
I was (un)fortunate enough to be in Oklahoma/Texas during some of the recent flooding. Not only did it cause problems for ranchers/homeowners, it caused problems on the highway as well.
The current construction project is the installation of water fountains for the horses at Jodi’s place. We rented a mini-excavator to dig the trench. The soil was very sandy (and dry) so the digging was quite pleasant. After placing the water line in the trench, we covered it with hay to provide some insulation. That may be a bit of overkill as the trench is an honest 6 feet deep, but one thing that’s easy to come by around here is hay. Better safe than sorry. We used my faithful old skidsteer to cover everything back up, and now the wires and water lines are patiently waiting to be hooked to the water fountains. Hopefully that will be my next “dispatch”.
If you check the “birdcam”, you can see the tomatoes slowly climbing their stakes in the garden. We’re finally getting some regular rain, so things should start taking off out there.
Hope you’re having a great Summer!
